Optimising Talent Acquisition for Gordon Murray Group

Gordon Murray Group (GMG), a renowned automotive design, engineering, and manufacturing company, had established itself as a global leader in the automotive industry. Founded by Professor Gordon Murray CBE in 2007, GMG's focus on innovative manufacturing technology had garnered it a reputation as one of the foremost automotive design teams globally.

Their strategy involves scaling up recruitment to align headcount with operational requirements, meet production demands, and support their new global headquarters. They required an experienced RPO specialist with strong automotive, project management and HR skills in order to meet talent acquisition objectives for business growth and organisational development.

In 2022, GMG embarked on a phase of rapid expansion, transitioning three groundbreaking driver-focused hypercars from concept to production. This expansion necessitated the rapid acquisition of highly skilled professionals in the hypercar and EV space. A crucial requirement emerged for a new procurement team with expertise in strategic commodity procurement, supply base maintenance, supplier development and management, team development, and supplier assessment.

High-level RPO objectives:  

  • Design and deploy an RPO solution for GMG which is fit for purpose, but with the flexibility to allow for revision in line with future operational, candidate or market requirements. 

  • Review/ evaluate talent acquisition and recruitment.  

  • Review/ evaluate existing recruitment data and reporting. 

  • Scope, configure and rollout an Eploy applicant tracking system (ATS) from candidate attraction to onboarding. 

  • Build and rollout recruitment dashboards and reports providing recruitment statistics and insight to both the GMG HR and Senior Leadership teams and the Optamor Service Delivery Team. 

  • Provide full process and ATS training to GMG HR, GMG Hiring Managers; Optamor Service Delivery Team, Supply Chain (PSL suppliers).

Solution 

Optamor, a specialist in recruitment process outsourcing (RPO), collaborated with GMG to address its talent acquisition challenges.  

 

The solution included several key components: 

 

Specialist Teams:  A best-in-class team provided by Optamor, including Rich Brown, Rich Mugridge, and Matt Whyley, with extensive experience in the automotive recruitment sector. swiftly aligned with GMG's hiring needs. Talent pools of potential candidates were created, and offshore partners were engaged to increase capacity, ensuring continuous candidate searches.

Technology: Cutting-edge technologies like Daxtra and Broadbean, combined with a customized CRM system, streamlined candidate management. An applicant tracking system (ATS), Eploy, was implemented, providing recruitment analytics and facilitating recruitment metrics management.

Attraction and Engagement: Optamor employed proven candidate attraction strategies, leveraging GMG's brand recognition within the automotive industry. Recruitment events were organised in collaboration with GMG stakeholders, attracting over 700 applicants across all roles. 

 

Optamor's partnership yielded exceptional results: 

  • A 3:1 CV-to-interview ratio across all roles. 

  • 10 critical hires in direct and indirect procurement between October 2022 and January 2023. 

  • A total of 20 hires through recruitment events, with additional qualified candidates in a talent pool for future requirements. 

  • Implementation of an ATS, resulting in improved recruitment metrics management and competitive talent acquisition capabilities. 

 

Key Achievements: 

  • A remarkable 97% direct fill rate on all GMG roles in the first year. 

  • An RPO solution focused on market intelligence and a consultative approach, unearthing niche skills. 

  • Cost avoidance and prevention through time efficiencies, HR process improvements, and onboarding streamlining. 

  • Enhanced visibility and management of recruitment metrics, replacing spreadsheet-based processes.
